Publishing
&
Media Translation

Publishing in another language is easy. Publishing a book that works in another language is not.

Translation for publishers: cookery books, children's annuals, craft titles and more

A cookery book needs recipes that make sense in the target market. A children's annual full of jokes, puzzles and wordplay needs linguists who can recreate the humour, not just convert the words. And any title published for sale needs to evoke the same response in the reader as the original, because if it doesn't, it won't sell.

The challenge for most publishers is not finding someone who can translate. It is finding a linguist who genuinely understands the subject, the audience and the creative demands of the content. A linguist who can recreate a pun, adapt a recipe for a different market or follow a set of craft instructions closely enough to know when the translation has made them impossible to follow. That is what determines whether a published title works in another language.

Subject-specialist linguists

A technically accurate translation of a cookery book is not enough if the recipes don't make sense to someone who actually cooks. A craft title fails if a practitioner immediately spots that the terminology is wrong. Subject knowledge is what prevents that. We match linguists to projects on that basis.
Card 1

Creative content that has to work

Jokes, puns and word games cannot be translated literally. A pun that works in English stops being funny in German if the translation follows the words rather than the joke. A crossword clue built around English spelling has no equivalent in French. The linguist has to find something that works for the reader in their own language, which requires creativity as much as language skill. For children's annuals and licensed co-editions, this is not a nice-to-have. A child who can't solve the puzzle or doesn't get the joke puts the book down. A co-edition that doesn't engage its market doesn't get reordered.

Consistent terminology throughout

A single publication can run to hundreds of pages. A term used on page twelve needs to be translated the same way on page two hundred. We build a glossary before translation begins and apply it throughout, including across series and multi-volume titles.

Titles that sell in the target market

A title published for sale in another market has to earn its place there. Readers who pick it up are not comparing it to the English original. They are judging it on its own terms. A linguist who understands the market knows what those terms are.

Production handled when you need it

When a title needs print-ready files as well as translation, we handle both. Our multilingual DTP team works from your InDesign files and manages typesetting, text expansion and layout for every language version. One brief, one supplier.

When the whole layout has to flip

Arabic and Hebrew require fully mirrored layouts. Page order, text direction, image placement and typographic conventions all change. Our linguists and production team handle right-to-left publishing as a single, coordinated process.

Deadline-driven project management

A missed print deadline delays publication, disrupts co-edition schedules and costs money. Publishing timelines have no slack for a translation that runs late. A dedicated project manager owns every job from brief to delivery, with translation and any production work managed against your schedule from the start.

Publishing translation
across every title type

Publishers and media organisations produce content across a wide range of formats, each with its own translation and production requirements. We cover all of them.

Cookery & Lifestyle Books

A recipe that works in English may not work translated literally. Ingredients need localising, measurements converting, techniques adapting. We produce cookery books that readers can actually cook from.

Children's Annuals & Illustrated Titles

Tight text boxes, illustrated layouts and age-appropriate language in the same package. We translate and typeset illustrated children's titles so the design holds together exactly as the original intended.

Craft & Hobby Books

Craft readers follow instructions. If the terminology is wrong or the steps are ambiguous, the project fails. Our linguists know the vocabulary of needlecraft, woodwork, gardening and other disciplines from the inside.

Film & Entertainment Annuals

Licensed publishing carries brand terminology, character names and franchise-specific language that cannot be improvised. We handle entertainment titles with the consistency that rights holders require.

Editorial & Media Content

A press release that reads like a sales document loses credibility. An editorial feature that sounds corporate loses readers. Media content in another language carries the same reputational risk as media content in English, and needs the same care with tone.

Digital & Online Publishing

Ebooks, digital editions and online magazines have their own formatting requirements alongside the translation. We handle both, delivering content that works on the platform it is published to.

Educational & Reference Publishing

Educational content is checked against by people who know the subject. Errors matter more than in most publishing contexts. We translate educational and reference titles with the precision that scrutiny demands.

Marketing & Promotional Materials

Catalogue copy, jacket descriptions and sales materials need to sell the title in the target language, not just describe it. A linguist who understands the market makes the difference between copy that converts and copy that informs.

Comics & Graphic Titles

Comics require translation within existing artwork: constrained space, specific lettering standards and a voice that has to match the character on the page. We handle the linguistic and production demands of sequential art as a single process.

Publishing into new markets means finding a linguist who understands your subject and your audience in the target language, not just someone who speaks it. A cookery book for the German market needs a German linguist who cooks. A children's annual for Japan needs someone who understands what makes Japanese children laugh.

We translate into all major publishing languages, with native-speaking linguists selected for their subject knowledge and publishing experience.
