Visitor Guide Translation for Oxford Museum of Natural History
Making one of the world's great natural history collections accessible to international visitors in six languages.
Oxford University Museum of Natural History needed multilingual visitor guides that made its collections accessible without dumbing down the science. Brightlines translated and typeset guides into Chinese, French, German, Polish, Spanish and Urdu.
The challenge
The museum's collections include specimens that shaped the history of science. The Oxford Dodo, Megalosaurus, Darwin-era collections. The visitor guides needed to tell those stories in a way that engaged a general audience while preserving the scientific accuracy the institution demands. That balance is the challenge: too technical and visitors disengage, too loose and the science suffers.
The language list added a production dimension. Chinese and Urdu require different text direction, character sets and typographic conventions from the European languages. Every guide needed to fit within the museum's existing design, regardless of how much longer or shorter the translated text ran or which direction it read.
Our approach
We used translators who specialised in natural history and museum content. Scientific terminology needed to be precise in every language, but the surrounding narrative needed to stay accessible and engaging. The translators worked from curator notes and reference images to ensure context was never lost between the English source and the translated version.
We handled all typesetting in-house, adapting the museum's existing design for each language. Chinese and Urdu required layout adjustments that went beyond text substitution: different line spacing, text direction and character widths. We delivered publication-ready files for all six languages, so the museum's team did not need to coordinate a separate production step.
