Serbian Translation Services

Vuk Karadžić led the 19th-century reform of Serbian on the principle "write as you speak, read as it is written". Serbian is a rare language with active digraphia: written in both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. Choosing between them is part of the brief.

Brightlines provides Serbian translation services for clients across the UK and internationally. As a UK translation agency, Brightlines works with automotive manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers with Serbian operations or partnerships, ICT and technology companies working with Serbian development centres or partners, mining and natural resources businesses with Serbian operations, legal and immigration firms serving Serbian-speaking clients, NHS trusts and healthcare bodies communicating with Serbian-speaking patients, financial services organisations with Serbian market exposure and consumer businesses entering the Serbian market. Brightlines matches every Serbian project to a translator with native Serbian command and confirmed sector experience.

Serbian at a glance

  • Script: Serbian is one of the few languages in the world with active digraphia, meaning both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets are officially used and readers are fluent in both. Cyrillic is the constitutional script, mandated for government paperwork, but Latin dominates in commerce, media and everyday use. Each script has 30 letters, with a one-to-one correspondence between them. The choice of script for a translation is a commercial decision, not a linguistic one: the target audience, context and purpose determine which is appropriate.
  • Speakers: Approximately 7 to 8 million native Serbian speakers, primarily in Serbia (around 5.9 million), Bosnia and Herzegovina (around 1.1 million in Republika Srpska), Montenegro and Kosovo, with substantial diaspora communities in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, Australia and the UK. Serbian is also an official language in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, and a recognised minority language in several EU countries.
  • Grammar and structure: Serbian is a South Slavic language, a standard variety of what was formerly known as Serbo-Croatian. It uses a seven-case grammar (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, vocative, locative, instrumental), three grammatical genders and a verbal aspect system distinguishing completed and ongoing actions. Word order is flexible because case endings show a word's role in the sentence, so meaning does not depend on position the way it does in English. Serbian uses the Ekavian pronunciation (mleko for milk) rather than the Ijekavian pronunciation used in Bosnian, Croatian and Montenegrin (mlijeko).
  • Translation risk: The most consistent commissioning error for Serbian is not confirming which script the deliverable should use. Cyrillic is required for content aimed at government audiences, educational and formal cultural contexts and older readers particularly outside Belgrade. Latin dominates commercial, digital and consumer contexts. Publishing content in the wrong script signals that the content was not produced for the intended audience. Serbian is also closely related to Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin but distinct: content produced for a Croatian audience uses Ijekavian pronunciation, different vocabulary and Latin script.
  • AI suitability: AI training data for Serbian is often mixed with data from Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin, and AI output for Serbian frequently contains cross-script inconsistencies (mixing Cyrillic and Latin within one document), Croatian-influenced vocabulary and Ijekavian forms where Ekavian is expected. Human review by a Serbian translator is required on every project.

How clients use our Serbian translation services

  • Automotive and manufacturing content: technical documentation, safety procedures, supplier communications, quality management materials and operational content for UK automotive manufacturers, Tier-1 suppliers and manufacturing businesses with Serbian operations, partnerships or supply chain relationships. Specialist Led Translation is required because Serbian automotive terminology follows European conventions with sector-specific vocabulary developed around the Stellantis Kragujevac plant and the surrounding supplier ecosystem, including Bosch, Michelin, Continental and specialist tire manufacturers in Pirot and Kruševac.
  • ICT, technology and business content: technical documentation, product content, marketing materials and business communications for UK ICT and technology companies working with Serbian development centres, Serbian partners or the Serbian market. Specialist Led Translation for structured technical content; Creative Translation for consumer-facing product and marketing content. Serbia's ICT sector is the country's largest export category, with an established Belgrade-Novi Sad-Niš tech corridor and strong AI, fintech and gaming industries.
  • Mining, energy and industrial content: technical specifications, safety documentation, regulatory submissions and business content for mining and natural resources companies with Serbian operations. Specialist Led Translation is required because Serbian mining and energy terminology has developed around major operations including the Zijin copper complex in Bor, lithium exploration in the Jadar Valley and steel production in Smederevo.
  • Legal, immigration, healthcare and public-sector content: certified translations of personal documents, immigration documentation, legal correspondence, patient information and public-sector communications for legal and immigration firms, NHS trusts and public-sector bodies serving Serbian-speaking clients and residents. Specialist Led Translation for legal and structured content; Creative Translation for community-facing communications.

What you get with Brightlines

Serbian translators matched to sector and script

For you: translators native to Serbian and matched to the content type, with the target script (Cyrillic or Latin) confirmed for the deliverable.

Brightlines works with Serbian translators who are native speakers and hold professional experience in the relevant content sector. Automotive and technical translators bring familiarity with the terminology used in the Serbian manufacturing sector. ICT translators bring command of Serbian technical vocabulary and the register commercial content requires. Mining and industrial translators bring familiarity with sector conventions. Legal and healthcare translators bring the register and terminology public-facing content demands. All Brightlines translators are fluent in both Cyrillic and Latin script, and the target script for each project is agreed at brief stage rather than assumed.

Human-led review of Serbian grammar, script consistency and Serbo-Croatian distinction

For you: case accuracy, script consistency and Ekavian pronunciation confirmed before delivery, not after audience feedback.

All Serbian translation work at Brightlines goes through a human review stage that checks case accuracy, script consistency (no accidental mixing of Cyrillic and Latin), Ekavian pronunciation, register appropriateness and vocabulary against the project brief. The review confirms that the content reads as Serbian rather than as Croatian, Bosnian or Montenegrin with Serbian script substitutions, and that terminology aligns with current Serbian conventions.
