Bulgarian Translation Services

Ivan Vazov helped consolidate the modern Bulgarian literary language while writing Under the Yoke, now translated into more than 30 languages. Bulgarian is a South Slavic language, but has evolved differently from its northern relatives: no cases, suffixed definite articles and no infinitive.

Brightlines provides Bulgarian translation services for clients across the UK and internationally. As a UK translation agency, Brightlines works with legal and immigration firms serving Bulgarian-speaking clients, NHS trusts and healthcare bodies communicating with Bulgarian-speaking patients, local authorities and public-sector bodies serving Bulgarian-speaking residents, financial services and business clients with Bulgarian operations or EU regulatory needs, tourism and hospitality businesses working with the Bulgarian market and organisations with Bulgarian-speaking workforces. Brightlines matches every Bulgarian project to a translator with native Bulgarian command and confirmed sector experience.

Bulgarian at a glance

  • Script: Cyrillic alphabet, 30 letters. The Cyrillic script itself originated in the First Bulgarian Empire in the 9th and 10th centuries, developed from the Glagolitic alphabet created by Saints Cyril and Methodius. Bulgarian Cyrillic differs from Russian Cyrillic in several characters and conventions, including the letters ъ (er golyam) and ь (er malak) which are used differently.
  • Speakers: Approximately 7 to 8 million native Bulgarian speakers, primarily in Bulgaria, with substantial diaspora communities across the EU (particularly Germany, Spain, Italy and the UK due to post-2007 labour migration) and further communities in the United States, Canada, Moldova, Ukraine, North Macedonia and other neighbouring countries. The UK Bulgarian community has grown significantly since 2014.
  • Grammar and structure: Bulgarian is a South Slavic language and part of the Balkan Sprachbund (alongside Greek, Albanian, Romanian and Macedonian). Its grammar is unusual among Slavic languages: it has largely lost the case system that other Slavic languages retain, uses a definite article suffixed to nouns (chovek becomes chovekat, "man" becomes "the man"), has no verb infinitive and includes evidential verb forms that distinguish witnessed information from reported. Word order is subject-verb-object but flexible.
  • Translation risk: Bulgarian is often assumed to be similar to Russian because both use Cyrillic, but the languages are structurally different: Bulgarian has no cases, uses a suffixed definite article and lacks the verb infinitive. Content produced by a Russian translator for a Bulgarian audience reads as belonging to another language, and Bulgarian audiences are alert to Russian-influenced vocabulary and grammar.
  • AI suitability: AI training data for Bulgarian is sparse compared to major European languages, and AI output for Bulgarian frequently contains Russian-influenced vocabulary, incorrect definite article placement, evidential verb form errors and structures borrowed from other Slavic languages. Human review by a Bulgarian translator is required on every project.

How clients use our Bulgarian translation services

  • Legal, immigration and certified translation: certified translations of personal documents, immigration documentation, witness statements and legal correspondence for legal and immigration firms with Bulgarian-speaking clients, plus certified translations for UK Home Office, UKVI and court purposes. Specialist-led translation is required because certified translations must meet UK certification standards, and Bulgarian legal and administrative terminology follows conventions distinct from Russian or other Slavic languages.
  • Healthcare and public-sector content: patient information, appointment letters, public health content and local authority communications for NHS trusts, local authorities and public-sector bodies serving Bulgarian-speaking residents in the UK. Specialist Led Translation for structured medical and public-sector content; Creative Translation for community-facing communications where register and cultural fluency matter.
  • Business, financial and tourism content: business correspondence, financial services documentation, EU regulatory content and marketing materials for UK businesses working with Bulgaria as an EU market or with Bulgarian partners, plus tourism and hospitality content for the Bulgarian market. Specialist Led Translation for structured business and financial content; Creative Translation for consumer-facing content where register matters.

What you get with Brightlines

Bulgarian translators matched to sector

For you: translators native to Bulgarian and matched to the content type, with the specific commercial vocabulary the deliverable requires.

Brightlines works with Bulgarian translators who are native speakers and hold professional experience in the relevant content sector. A legal and certified translation specialist brings familiarity with UK Home Office requirements and the conventions Bulgarian personal documents use. A business or financial translator brings command of Bulgarian commercial and EU regulatory terminology. Bulgarian is a smaller specialist field than the major European commercial languages, and Brightlines works with translators who have both native command and sector experience.

Human-led review of Bulgarian grammar, script and Slavic-language distinction

For you: definite article placement, evidential verb forms and Bulgarian-Cyrillic distinctions confirmed before delivery, not after audience feedback.

All Bulgarian translation work at Brightlines goes through a human review stage that checks definite article placement, evidential verb forms, verb aspect, register appropriateness and vocabulary against the project brief. The review confirms that the content reads as Bulgarian rather than as Russian-influenced or as a mix of Slavic-language conventions.
