• Script: Kurdish is written in different scripts depending on the variety and where the audience is. Kurmanji (spoken in Turkey, Syria and the western diaspora) is written in the Hawar Latin alphabet developed in the 1930s. Sorani (spoken in Iraq and Iran) is written in a modified Perso-Arabic script. Cyrillic was used historically by Kurdish communities in the former Soviet Union but is now rare. • Speakers: Approximately 29 million native Kurdish speakers across a region spanning parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria, with substantial diaspora communities in Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. • Grammar and structure: Kurdish is an Indo-European language of the Iranian branch, closely related to Persian and more distantly to English. It is not Turkic or Arabic. The main Kurdish varieties differ in grammar as well as script: Kurmanji has grammatical gender (masculine and feminine) and case marking; Sorani has no grammatical gender and uses different pronominal enclitics. Both use subject-object-verb word order and both show ergative-absolutive alignment in past-tense transitive verbs, meaning past-tense grammar behaves differently from other Indo-European languages.
• Translation risk: The most consistent commissioning error for Kurdish is treating it as a single language. Kurmanji, Sorani and Southern Kurdish are not mutually intelligible, and content produced in one variety does not serve an audience that reads another. Kurdish is written in different scripts: Latin for Kurmanji, Perso-Arabic for Sorani. The target variety and script follow the target audience: Turkish and Syrian Kurdish diaspora typically read Kurmanji in Latin, while Iraqi and Iranian Kurdish diaspora typically read Sorani in Perso-Arabic. Content produced without agreement on variety and script does not reach the audience it is intended for.
